Lucía Vallejo Garay

Born in 1975, Bilbao (ES).
Lives and works in Madrid (ES).

Lucía Vallejo Garay is a sculptor and art historian who regularly exhibits at leading international galleries and art fairs, including ARCOmadrid, Art Cologne, Pulse New York, and ZONAMACO. Over the past decade, she has collaborated with renowned galleries such as Galería Maior, Distrito 4, and Galería Pilar Serra.

Her practice is rooted in the field of expanded painting—an approach that challenges the traditional boundaries of the canvas and explores the spatial and three-dimensional potential of painting. In Vallejo Garay’s work, the pictorial surface transforms into sculptural volume. Her early pieces involved manipulating fabrics and canvases—tearing, folding, and twisting them—to shape the void itself. This material exploration eventually evolved into large-scale installations.

A pivotal moment in her career came with her exhibition at Casal Solleric, where she began developing site-specific projects for public spaces. Her 2017 exhibition at La Fragua de Tabacalera, organized by the Promotion of Art of the Spanish Ministry of Culture, consolidated this evolution, delving deeper into the female figure and the symbolic presence of death, with the concept of Memento Mori as a key reference in her later works.

In her most recent series, Vallejo Garay has embraced the challenge of fusing canvas with glass, creating a striking synthesis between these two materials. This innovative dialogue is the result of years of experimentation with various types of glass, beginning with Murano and later incorporating Bohemian glass.

Her work is included in numerous international public and private collections, such as the Coca-Cola Foundation, as well as the personal collections of prominent collectors, including Ursula Hauser and Lilly Scarpetta.
